Wild Flower (15th Jatnuary 2014)
This exciting group led by saxophonist Matt Anderson gave us an evening of wonderful jazz.
Formed to celebrate the work of saxophonist Wayne Shorter, the band is rich in talent and played with great skill and spirit.
As well as enjoying Matt's relaxed and elegant playing, his compositional skills were featured on five numbers. These held their own against those from Shorter chosen for the gig.
Trumpeter Laura Jurd is described in The Guardian as, "technically awesome" and has a rounded , polished sound. This blended beautifully with the tenor sax in the ensembles. Her improvisation was excellent throughout and she produced notable solos on many numbers.
Jamil Sheriff is a highly regarded pianist and composer who never disappoints. His creativity is remarkable, whether being quirky and fun on a number or poignant and engrossed on another.
Exceptional support was given by bass player Sam Vicary and drummer Sam Gardner who helped to shape this accomplished group.
As Laura is the only member of the band not to have studied at The Leeds College of Music, the night was a positive advertisement for the college !
We have the musical sensibilities and intelligence of Matt Anderson to thank for this recital of fresh and original music.
