Frank Brooker (17th January 2018)

SWINGING AT THE CASK

It is testament to Frank Brooker’s enduring appeal that a full crowd braved Wednesday  night’s severe chill to see him at The Cask, Scarborough’s archetypal jazz cellar.

A frequent visitor over the years, Frank has built up quite a following -  who recognise his distinctive qualities  on smooth and mellow tenor, on a clarinet as silvery as his hair and, indeed, on expressive vocals. They marvel, moreover, at his sheer inventiveness – on a range of material that ranges from popular standards to stuff as rare as hen’s teeth.

GENIUS OF DJANGOLOGY  - GARY POTTER AT THE CASK

In this age of hype and hyperbole how simply wonderful to find somebody living up to an immense reputation. Swing guitarist Gary Potter is in the flesh everything the reviews and videos suggest he might be – a genius of Djangology!

The Matt Holborn Quartet (4th May 2016)

This group played The Cask on the first night of their tour.  They were in good humour and keen to perform their repertoire of gypsy jazz to a good-sized audience.

The band triumphantly achieved that insistent, bouncy swing, typical of the Hot Club recordings and were a pleasure to listen to.  Added to that, the passion, lyricism and sheer musical accomplishment of the lead instrumentalists made for a great evening.

Seven Pieces of Silver (2nd March 2016)

This fine band were on the penultimate gig of a thirteen date tour.  They played with such energy and verve that they could have been on their first engagement!

The core of their repertoire is the music of jazz giant Horace Silver.  Much of this has been arranged by their double bass playing leader, Paul Baxter.
